I kept scrolling back to the first year of the COVID shutdowns - a time of incredible loss for me personally and professionally - and bumped into this post from September 2020. I soaked it in. 😌 I thought the message - even though I’m now sharing it in a time of abundance - is just as relevant today as we look toward a new year. What I know to be true, even loss can be an invitation to connect. It took me a couple of decades to connect-the-dots, but when I understood I could plan and promote events as the artisan I was born to be, my planning game changed! Many years ago, on the prompting of a colleague, I learned about my Top 5 Strengths*. After a quick 15 minute quiz, it turned out, topping the list of my "Top 5" was “Connectedness”. 
 Remarkably, that quick quiz started me on a journey to learn more about how I had been "showing up" since I was a kid - consistently and creatively connecting people, projects, and ideas. I was a "Natural Connector". Bosses in the past wondered why I was so bent on bringing people together to gain a greater understanding of a project. Some even thought exploring project "connecting points" was more of a waste of time than it was a way to take our team to the next level. Why couldn't I just "do the work" I was told to do? Since that revelation, I have taken the time to learn more about what it would mean to intentionally bring “connectedness” into my life and work. It took me on the journey to finding true alignment with myself and helped me embrace my life's work. I now live out “connectedness” in my every day interactions and have intensified my work to support event planners and their teams to plan events with the "connection first" approach. As I was building The Connection Architect Course & Community, I started making notes on how we ALL could start to recognize “connectedness” in our lives. Recently I was able to fly from Calgary to Abbotsford to visit with my Mom and 2 older sisters. It was made even more special as I had the chance to interview my Mom, the one natural connector that inspired and influenced my life and work like no other! Mary was the 10th child in a family of 11 kids. Her mom, my Grandma, loved to have guests in their home – no matter if there was food to feed them or a clean couch to sit on. Grandpa was always ready to feed the horses even if surprise guests would visit their farm. I have come to know this as “radical hospitality” and this is something I talk about a lot as a Connection Strategy Coach! Even though my Mom was raised in a humble home, it was filled with constant conversation, big dreams, … and lot of music! Her love for music brought her out of her shell and started her on the road to becoming a connector and community builder she is, even today. As she grew older, her drive to connect others together through music matched perfectly with my Dad’s natural way of encouraging others as a teacher and eventually a pastor. They married young and started their life of travel, adventure, and investing deeply in every community they called home. It was a gift to be able to travel from Calgary to Abbotsford to celebrate our family Christmas early. Even my sisters were able to fly in from Winnipeg and Armstrong to join in. The icing on the Christmas cake for me was to get the chance to interview my mom and hear more of her story, record it, and now share it with you. I have experienced firsthand how important it is to her to build a legacy of lasting connections. I hope through this conversation you’ll be inspired to build and leave a legacy of your own.

When I started to produce a podcast in July of this year, my hope was that listeners would get to know my guests and be inspired by their "connector" ways. I also knew I would be telling parts of my own story as a connector and what has inspired my work as a Connection Strategy Coach. That felt a little more vulnerable. I received an email yesterday from someone who had listened to some of the episodes and sent me a note saying "I have been listening to your podcast and feel I've gotten to know you a little." That was it. NOT "it was great" ... or "I liked what you had to say" ... or "I agree with what I heard" ... or "It changed how I am going to connect with my clients!". Just "I've gotten to know you a little." And that was enough ... for now. I have been helping clients create better connections with their customers, clients, and community members for over 12 years. When I facilitate an event strategy session for a planning team we get to the heart of WHO they are and WHY they are planning. It's an essential step in building better connections through events. We talk about showing more of what's REAL in their world and less about sharing a manufactured message. Getting real is about communicating authentically and openly with those you wish to serve. Are you sharing the purpose and personality of your company, organization, or group so clearly that your guests can say "I've gotten to know you a little" through the events you plan? That is where real conversation, real CONNECTION starts. I'm still surprised sometimes - when I choose to step out and do what I coach others to do - that it works. I don't know the person on the other end of that email - yet - but his message was an open door to collaborate. It took me a couple of decades to connect-the-dots, but when I understood I could plan and promote events as the artisan I was born to be, my planning game changed! As a coach, I started applying a more creative, artistic, connection-first approach with my clients. They in turn started to craft more creative and long-lasting connections with their customers, clients, and communities through the events they would plan. "Connection first" was at the heart of every level of the planning process.  Now, after 12 years as a Connection Strategy Coach, it's still my dream to guide everyday event planners to embrace their brilliance, activate their experience, and cultivate meaningful connections.
